Description de l’événement
Tree Canada, in collaboration with the City of Charlottetown, is excited to celebrate National Tree Day (NTD), presented by BMO! This is the biggest NTD celebration yet, with events taking place across the country during National Forest Week. Join us at Evergreen Park to plant trees and connect with nature! Volunteers will support the Urban Forestry and Hurricane Restoration goals of the City by helping plant up to 200 native trees and shrubs, with guidance from Tree Canada experts and experienced volunteers who will be there to support you and answer your tree-related questions.
Using an adapted version of the Miyawaki Method for Forest Restoration volunteers will plant these species in dense arrangements, mimicking a model forest complete with food sources, habitats and other services for both humans and local wildlife.
We’ll provide gloves and shovels—just bring your enthusiasm!
Our continuously adapted and improved use of the Miyawaki Method for Forest Restoration facilitates enhancements to local biodiversity in several ways. Firstly, biodiverse selections of plant species are made with special consideration of localized needs for abundance or evenness and diversity of ecosystem services. Through diversity, stability and equitable distribution of these ecosystem services, biodiversity is additionally enhanced and given resilience in other taxa including animals and fungi. Finally, in response to climate change, species are selected with special considerations given to their resilience to the anticipated effects of climate change including high heat, strong winds, and drought-tolerance thereby providing inherent resilience to the newly-enhanced biodiversity of the urban forest.
