Willow Creek Restoration Planting

Description de l’événement

The Willow Creek planting project at Stavely Elks Campground is a major restoration initiative aimed at revitalizing the land through large-scale tree planting.  This area provides habitat for several species at risk, including confirmed nesting sites for Cliff Swallows and confirmed sightings of Common Nighthawks. The river and its tributaries also serve as crucial fish habitats, underscoring the ecological importance of this work.

Soil analysis confirmed that the site contains rich organic and mineral deposits capable of supporting tree seedlings even in periods of drought. Part of the project focuses on planting shoreline species to stabilize and enhance the lakeshore of the Pine Coulee reservoir, a popular fishing and camping destination. Historically, the campground land was used for grazing, but with new fencing in place, it now offers an ideal location for long-term forest growth.

With planting led by Shakti by TELUS, the project is well underway. In spring, 29,280 trees were successfully planted, and this fall, an additional 20,720 will be added. A variety of species (Cottonwood, Willow, Silverberry, Aspen, and Chokecherry) are being introduced, including several thousand additional seedlings to fill areas on the north hills where spring survival rates were lower. These deliberate efforts will ensure the establishment of a resilient mixed-species forest.

The goals of the Willow Creek project are to restore tree cover, provide habitat for sensitive wildlife, increase biodiversity, improve the aesthetic appeal of the campground, and create shaded areas for visitors. Ultimately, this project will transform the site into a thriving forest that will benefit local communities, visitors, and ecosystems for generations to come.
